The saying goes, “we all have 24 hours in a day.” So, how is that some people get more done than others?
For 10 years, I did not consistently produce quality writing because I was ‘busy’. My schedule was hectic and chaotic. I put my writing to the side.
It wasn’t until I made up my mind that writing was not an option that I began to see my career grow. In order to become a successful writer, I had to write.
Here are 4 proven ways that will help you produce more everyday.
1.Set Priorities. What can do without you for a few minutes? Think about it. What are you doing that is taking the place of your writing time? Reality TV, Social Media craziness? Are you on Twitter and Facebook all day instead of writing? Are you reading too much? Yes, it’s possible. As writers we do like to read, but it comes a time when you have to put down someone else’s book and write your own. Make your writing a main concern in your life.
2.Set a Schedule. When I first began dating my husband, I was unemployed. I had all the time in the world to spend with him. That quickly changed when I began working again. We realized that we didn’t have a lot of time to hang out. What did we do? As unromantic as it sounds – we set a dating schedule. Yes! Can you believe it? We did. And it worked. We saw each other on Mondays and Thursdays. One year later we were engaged. We’ve been married 8 ½ years and counting. Set a schedule for your writing. When you’re serious about growing your writing career, you’ll set time within your 24 hours to write.
3.Set a Word Count. How many words do you need to complete your book? Don’t know? It’s time to set a word count. An average novel ranges from 65,000 words to 80,000 words. Most non-fiction books are approximately 45,000 words and upward. You do the math. How long will it take you to write 80,000 words? Two weeks, two months or two years? You decide – then make it happen.
4.Set a Deadline. Are you joking? No, I’m not. I don’t have a book contract yet! Set a deadline, anyway. By setting a deadline to complete your novel, your non-fiction work or even an article moves you from dreaming to reality. How long does it really take to write a book? Can I meet a contracted deadline? Practice setting deadlines and meeting them. It will increase your productivity.
It’s true – we all have the same 24 hours in a day. Don’t be sidetracked by procrastination or the promise of getting it done “when you feel like it.” Be intentional about your goals and stick to them. It will pay off.
